"The Big But" Sizzle Reel

A fully animated sizzle reel demonstrating concept and game play for game show TV pitch.

When pitching a new TV concept, it is a common practice to create a “rip reel,” in which video clips are pulled from existing sources and re-edited/manipulated to represent the new idea. However, when a pitch is truly unique, and comp footage doesn’t exist, how do you visually represent your idea? There are several approaches, but the solution I presented my client in this case was to do so graphically. I created a simple 3D mock up of the stage, complete with the 5-story free fall wall and 2 jumbo-trons required for game play. Next, I sourced plenty of stock images, performed the background removal and other edits needed, and populated my 3D set with them to create freeze frame versions of the scenes we would see within the game show. By adding motion elements, camera movements, and stage lighting, the frozen scenes became dynamic, and a show that doesn’t exist yet could finally be pictured by the prospective buyers.
