"Take The Cake" Sizzle Reel
2-minute sizzle reel for a unique competition TV series.
Roles: Writer, Senior Producer, Video Editor, Animator
Client: Invent TV
When Invent TV Casting Producer, Joey Gemelli, was interviewing a slew of bakers for a baking series, he noticed a pattern in many of their stories: most of them had hilariously cringy experience dropping an expensive fancy cake while transporting it to the client. That gave him the idea for a competition show where baking the cake is just the beginning, and getting it through an obstacle course unscathed was the true battle. The idea was simple but clever, and I wanted the sizzle to reflect that. It needed to be clear that we weren’t taking it too seriously and the viewers shouldn’t either; it’s about the FUN. To accomplish this, I decided that the VO should read like Dr. Suess, and I wrote some of the silliest and most fun copy I’ve ever written, (delivered by the amazing Hilary Cruz.) Most of the reel could use ripped footage, but I wanted the potential buyers to easily picture the obstacle course as well, and so I designed some slo-mo graphical scenes depicting what it may contain. I wanted the obstacles themselves to reflect the the bakers’ stories, becoming larger than life versions of their real-life obstacles. Coming up with these obstacles was more challenging than I anticipated, but ultimately they were very fun to imagine; a giant oven, a literal giant bride-zilla, mariachi horns blasting in the player’s ear, …some days my work is play.
