"The Big But" Sizzle Reel

Short animated sizzle reel designed to explain and pitch a concept for a unique game show idea. A great example of just one way a unique concept can be visualized even when no existing comps are available.

Roles: Writer, Senior Producer, Video Editor, Animator

Client: Invent TV

Often I am brought just the seeds of an idea, and it is my job to flesh it out into a well-formed marketable concept. In this case, I was presented the idea of a dating game show based on a current Tik Tok trend of re-rating “perfect 10’s” after finding out new and humorous information about them. It was suggested that contestants could be sat in chairs that move across the stage from postions 1-10 as they gain or lose rank based on revelations about themselves, and it was left to me to figure out the rest. Well, the first thing I did was to change the one thing they gave me. I couldn’t imagine audiences being interested in sliding seats, BUT what if we hoisted those seats 5 stories into the air and dropped them into a free fall when they lost their rankings? Now that seemed like network game show spectacle people might tune in for. Also, it needed a name, because the working title, “10, But” was never going to translate to TV. I suggested “The Big But,” and from that moment on none of the team could imagine it being called anything but. I came up with 3 distinct rounds of game play all based around the original conceit, tested them out for holes, fixed those holes, and then and only then began to prepare an actual presentation.
